Lodeinoe Pol'e as the chief town of the
local uezd (district) was founded by the decree of Catherine
II on May 16, 1785 but its history began in 1702 when a shipyard
was laid here on the bank of the Svir' River following the
order of Peter I. The ships built at the yard showed their
worth in both naval battles of Northern War and other campaigns
and important voyages. The 28-gun frigate "Shtandart
(Standart)", the firstling of the Baltic fleet, and sloop
"Mirny (Peaceful)" that participated in discovery
of Antarctica were built at the Lodeinopol'sky shipyard. Details
of old boats, fragments of the original shipyard, scale models
of ships are displayed in the museum.
In the early 20th century the town of Lodeinoe
Pol'e had 9 streets built with mostly wooden houses; its population
was 1,500 people. The Cathedral of Sv.Petra I Pavla (Sts.Peter
and Paul) was the landmark of the town.
The town perked up during the local festivals
- the Peter and Paul's fair in June and Christmas one in winter
and at Shrovetide with its carriage-and-three driving. Local
peasants and craftsmen were selling their produce - famous
Oyat' pottery and toys, barrels and other wood wares, traditional
clothing etc.
Farming was another occupation of local
residents, with rye and flax being the main agricultural cultures.
In long winter evenings peasant girls used to spin and embroider
garments and towels for their future dowry. Geometrical patterns
of the embroidery are typical for the culture of the Vepsians
who have been residing in the Svir' lands for ages.
Construction of the Murmanskaya railway
contributed to further development of the town. One of the
railroad sections, Zvanka-Lodeinoe Pol'e, with a railway station,
locomotive depot and car repair shops was ready by 1915. Lodeinoe
Pol'e became an important junction in the northeast of Peterburgskaya
province.
