Lodeinoe Pol'e as the chief town of the local uezd (district) was founded by the decree of Catherine II on May 16, 1785 but its history began in 1702 when a shipyard was laid here on the bank of the Svir' River following the order of Peter I. The ships built at the yard showed their worth in both naval battles of Northern War and other campaigns and important voyages. The 28-gun frigate "Shtandart (Standart)", the firstling of the Baltic fleet, and sloop "Mirny (Peaceful)" that participated in discovery of Antarctica were built at the Lodeinopol'sky shipyard. Details of old boats, fragments of the original shipyard, scale models of ships are displayed in the museum.

In the early 20th century the town of Lodeinoe Pol'e had 9 streets built with mostly wooden houses; its population was 1,500 people. The Cathedral of Sv.Petra I Pavla (Sts.Peter and Paul) was the landmark of the town.

The town perked up during the local festivals - the Peter and Paul's fair in June and Christmas one in winter and at Shrovetide with its carriage-and-three driving. Local peasants and craftsmen were selling their produce - famous Oyat' pottery and toys, barrels and other wood wares, traditional clothing etc.

Farming was another occupation of local residents, with rye and flax being the main agricultural cultures. In long winter evenings peasant girls used to spin and embroider garments and towels for their future dowry. Geometrical patterns of the embroidery are typical for the culture of the Vepsians who have been residing in the Svir' lands for ages.

Construction of the Murmanskaya railway contributed to further development of the town. One of the railroad sections, Zvanka-Lodeinoe Pol'e, with a railway station, locomotive depot and car repair shops was ready by 1915. Lodeinoe Pol'e became an important junction in the northeast of Peterburgskaya province.

The smooth life of provincial Lodeinoe Pol'e of the 20th century was first disturbed in the years of Civil War when the Red Army units stopped the White Army trying to reach Petrograd.

Grandiose construction of the Nizhne-Svirskaya hydropower station - one of the firstlings of Russia's electrification plan- was the next important event. The station was built in 14 km up the Svir' River under supervision of the talented engineer and scientist Genrikh Graftio. The first unit of the hydropower station was set going in 1933.

Great Patriotic War is a tragic page of the area history. The Svir' River was one of the most important lines of the Karelian front which stopped the enemy on its moving to Leningrad and prevented the second circle of the siege around it be locked.

The right bank of the Svir' River was extremely fortified by the enemy. It had 6 defense lines with the total width of 180 km. In every 50-100 m pillboxes and emplacements were arranged.

Many examples of heroic deeds are documented in the museum exhibit. The division under command of sergeant Vassily Polishchuk fought to the bitter end near the Yandeba River in November 1941; 16 guardsmen from the 37th corps of General V.Mironov revealed unprecedented courage during forced crossing of the Svir' in June 1944. Title of the Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded to 51 people for the battles at the Svir' line.

In the result of bloody battles the Soviet Army reached the border with Finland in August 1944 and the armistice with this country was signed in September 1944.

The town of Lodeinoe Pol'e was destroyed in the war and it took much effort and time to rebuild it.

To commemorate the battles of Great Patriotic War the "Svirskaya Pobeda (Victory)" park and museum complex were laid in Lodeinoe Pol'e. The ceremony of its opening took place on November 7, 1944. The moment of opening and museum structures of those days are documented in the photographs. The complex included a stele with inscription copying the decree by Stalin, the main building of the museum, pavilions of aviation, armoured forces and combat engineers.

In the early 1950-ies the pavilions were disassembled and weapons removed. The park has grown into one of the favorate places of rest for the town residents. The main building of the "Svirskaya Victory" complex (architect V.Vorontsov, artist Ya.Titov) has been preserved. It has been housing the collections of the Museum of the Local History and Tradition since 1968 illustrating different periods of the area development.
