Through the exhibits of the Gatchina Memorial
Museum of Pavel Shcherbov visitors can explore the spirit
of the early 20th century. The museum of the well known artist,
the pioneer of national cartoons, was arranged in his estate
in 1992. The estate is not only a place retaining memories
of many famous artists and writers like Mikhail Nesterov or
Maksim Gorky but one of the few survived country houses built
in the late Art Nouveau style (architect S.Krichinsky, 1911).
It is the artist's widow Anastasia Shcherbova
who put a lot of effort into initiation of the museum.
Special exhibits are devoted to the history
and architecture of Gatchina, first days of Russian air force
and school of pilots located in Gatchina, famous writer Aleksandr
Kuprin and World War II years.
Fine and applied art, coins, photographs,
documents, historic relics and artifacts are presented in
the museum depository fund.
In winter season (between October 15 and
April 30) every Sunday Russian romances and folk songs can
be heard at the concerts arranged in the cosy drawing room
of the museum.
The museum exhibition hall often houses
rotating art shows.
